Turf Industry Wages & Awards

The Australian Sports Turf Managers Association Golf Salary Report

Salaries, wages and conditions of employment have been a key topic at both state and national conferences for many years and unfortunately these discussions rarely conclude with positive outcomes and better wages and conditions for employees due to the lack of reliable data.

Golf Course Superintendents are frequently enquiring as to what is appropriate remuneration for their position and that of their staff, but the lack of such data has always been a challenge for the industry, and members.

Salary Survey

In the ASTMA’s 2010 Member Survey, an overwhelming number of members wanted the association to undertake an annual salaries and wages review. This highlighted the importance to members of understanding the industry benchmark for staff remuneration. In view of this response, and in keeping with our ongoing intention to provide assistance to our members, the ASTMA decided to carry out a detailed survey of salaries for key positions at golf courses.

The initial survey was undertaken in conjunction with Golf Management Australia, and we are pleased to continue to co-operate with the GMA in gathering this important information for members.

This survey report provides an up to date review of salaries and wages information for the following key golf course management positions;

  • Superintendents
  • Assistant Superintendents
  • Foreman
  • Qualified Greenkeepers
  • Groundstaff
  • Equipment Technicians

The survey concentrated on several different parameters including;

  • Club revenue
  • Club membership fees

2010 Award Modernisation

As of January 1, 2010, the Federal Government’s Award Modernisation came into effect. The key objective of award modernisation is to reduce the number of awards in the system, by creating awards with national coverage across industry and occupational lines.  For the golf industry, this has seen greenkeepers covered under three awards, the most relevant being the Registered and Licensed Clubs Award. The Gardening Services Award and the Amusement, Events and Recreation Award also cover some sectors of our industry.  More Information
