The ASTMA’s Australian Turfgrass Management Journal was recognised at the 2020 Australian Golf Media Awards which were held online last night. ATM editor Brett Robinson’s feature on former Townsville Golf Club course superintendent Jason Foster, which appeared in the Nov-Dec 2019 edition, won the ‘Best long form story’ (more than 1000 words) category.
The article tracked Foster’s remarkable recovery after he received third degree burns to a third of his body following an explosion at the course’s on-site sewage treatment plant in January 2018. CLICK HERE to read the article.
In making their decision, the judging panel, which comprised of Karen Lunn (former touring pro and now CEO of the WPGA Tour of Australasia), Melbourne-based journalist Steve Perkin and former Australia Associated Press editor and long-time golf writer John Coomber, wrote…
“This was easily the most difficult category to decide. In truth any of five or six entries would have been worthy winners. In the end the judges chose Brett’s sensitively handled account of Jason Foster’s recovery from a horrific workplace accident at Townsville Golf Club. Brett does his research very thoroughly and shows great narrative skill.” Highly commended in the same category was Australian Golf Digest’s Steve Keipert for his excellent analysis of what is right and wrong with golf architecture in Australia.
