In the latest Sports Turf Manager industry advocacy video, we feature Michael Salvatore, Executive manager for Turf at The MCG.
As an integral part of the Sports Turf Management industry, this video highlights the diversity of the role of an Executive Manager for Turf. The sports turf manager is entrusted with the operation and management of sports fields and facilities, with the MCG being the most iconic sports ground in Australia, hosting plenty of international cricket including the first-ever Test and the 1992 World Cup final, countless VFL/AFL Grand Finals, and the 1956 Olympic Games.
Salvatore has been with the MCC for over 10 years’ in a number of turf and curatorial roles, now with the title of Executive Manager for Turf.
With COVID-19 sending the 2020 AFL Premiership season interstate, the hallowed sporting arena has been eerily vacant for the majority of the year, with Salvatore the only member of staff tending to the turf during Melbourne’s Stage 4 lockdown. There are high hopes still for a Boxing Day test at the MCG with Salvatore stating, "We’re just waiting for the government."
Together with the Office of the Victorian Skills Commissioner (OVSC), the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association has been working to highlight the critical work that Sports Turf Managers undertake and the value they contribute to the entire Sports & Recreation industry.
