2019 President’s Cup Course Update

Thursday 21, Nov 2019

With just three weeks to go until the start of the Presidents Cup, works on course have continued with the Composite holes now becoming the main focus for staff.  RMGC staff and volunteers have been assigned a work roster for tournament week so it is all getting very close now. Last week on the course and in the maintenance facility we have undertaken the following;

  • Greens (Suttons Mix) and fine fescue surrounds were topdressed. This will be the last time sand will be applied before the tournament.
  • Bunkers have been a focus in recent weeks with the following undertaken: trimming of edges with shears used to maintain the integrity of the bunker edge; selective trimming of bunker tongues and rough around bunkers; re-distribution of sand in bunkers pulling down windblown sand on faces and levelling bases; and sieving of bunker sand
  • The following products have been applied: preventive fungicide and miticide applied to fairways and tees; Seasol calcium to fairways; broadleaf herbicide spot sprayed in rough; first granular fertiliser to Santa Ana tees for the growing season (10-1-13).
  • Grinding of nine fairway mowers and height lowered to 7mm.
  • Toro have kindly loaned some equipment to add to our fleet for the tournament which will be very useful over the next few weeks. Among the loan equipment includes 10 utility vehicles, three fairway mowers, four hand mowers.

While all this has been going on, Stage 1 construction works on the adjacent Sandringham course are nearing completion and work is continuing to prepare the site for the fan village and car park requirements.

The tournament build has continued to ramp up with an ever-increasing number of contractors, trucks, forklifts and deliveries coming through the gates. A large structure is under construction on the 8th west fairway requiring temporary hole arrangements to be implemented. Player cabins, media centre, grand stands and hospitality buildings are nearing completion.

On Monday we hosted the Presidents Cup Media Day with a host of celebrities, media and sports stars teeing up to experience the Composite Course. Among those playing were International Team assistant Geoff Ogilvy, Ian Baker-Finch, Nick O’Hern, Shane Warne, Sam Newman, Brendan Goddard, Ian Healy, Mark Taylor and comedians Mick Molloy, Rob Sitch and Glenn Robbins.
