Thomson joins AGCSA Board

Friday 12, Jul 2019

Long-serving Bermagui Country Club course superintendent David Thomson (pictured) was elected to the AGCSA Board at the 2019 AGCSA Annual General Meeting held during the Brisbane conference. Thomson replaces Royal Hobart superintendent Steve Lewis who stepped aside at the AGM after five years on the Board, including the past three as treasurer.

Thomson has been involved in the industry for more than 30 years and has been superintendent at Bermagui on the NSW South Coast since July 2001.

Thomson began his journey as an apprentice at Tura Beach Country Club, before taking on assistant superintendent roles at Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club and Hope Island Resort in the early 1990s.

In 1994 he headed to Malaysia to be construction superintendent at Clearwater Sanctuary Golf Resort, before heading home in 1999 to join the crew as assistant at Mollymook.

During his time at Bermagui, Thomson has undertaken countless projects to improve the course and has trained a legion of apprentices who have gone on to great careers of their own.

For his efforts and contribution to the industry, the NSWGCSA awarded Thomson its Outstanding Achievement Award in 2017.

In stepping off the AGCSA Board, Lewis thanked all members, the AGCSA Board and staff for their support during his tenure: “I’d like to thank all the AGCSA staff for their dedication to their roles and to CEO Mark Unwin whose professionalism continues to grow. I wish him and the association all the best with the future ahead. I’ve got no doubt they will succeed.

I also wish David all the best coming onto the AGCSA Board and thank my fellow directors for what we have achieved over the past five years.

We have gone through some highs and lows during this period, but I loved the challenges that have been thrown at us.”

Thomson joins a Board that comprises president Brett Balloch (Anglesea GC, Vic), Peter Lonergan (Coolangatta & Tweed Heads GC, NSW) and Chris Burgess (Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Resort, NSW). Burgess was re-elected for another two-year period at the 2019 AGM.
