Future Turf Managers' Initiative (FTMI)

AGCSA Future Turf Managers' Initiative (FTMI)
Presented in partnership with Jacobsen

The AGCSA recognises the importance of preparing golf course maintenance personnel to take on the role of superintendent, course manager or assistant.  Jacobsen has successfully developed and runs the Future Turf Managers Initiative (FTMI) across many countries for just this purpose.  Together, the AGCSA and Jacobsen now offer this highly successful training opportunity to Australian course maintenance staff.

The FTMI has been designed to provide practical tools and guidance to help assist candidates with their career aspirations through this interactive, professional development programme.

Working with qualified trainers, mentors, AGCSA and Jacobsen staff, participants will leave FTMI with a clear understanding of what the future holds and a realistic overview of the expectations that come with their climb up the management ladder.

In 2017 the Australian and New Zealand FTMI programmes were merged with the successful candidates from both countries coming together at the Australian Turfgrass Conference for two full days of education.  (click here for related article)  As both the AGCSA and Jacobsen are keen for participant to get the most from the initiative and to keep it fresh and vibrant, 2018 will see it moved from being part of the conference and held as a stand-alone event.  Candidates from New Zealand and Australia will still participate together, however the sole focus will be on the initiative, giving participants and mentors more time together to concentrate on personal and professional development.

"The FTMI program is a must for each up and coming Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent. The training and exposure to certain situations I received in 2 days would have taken 12 months to gain."

Brock Agnew, Sanctuary Cove Golf & Country Club, QLD (2016)

"The FTMI is great for aspiring superintendents to get a glimpse behind the scenes of some of the tasks not usually practiced as an assistant.  The experience, knowledge, tools and connections acquired from the program has given me more confidence to become a better turf manager."

Jason Berkhout, Thurgoona Country Golf Resort, NSW (2017)

In 2018 the FTMI will take place in Melbourne from Sunday 25 – Tuesday 27 March 2018 with an intensive two days of seminars, talks and workshops covering subjects such as;
•  Communications
•  Budgeting
•  Team management
•  CV writing and interview techniques
•  Networking
•  Career development

Sessions will be presented by keynote speakers, established and respected superintendents/course managers (mentors) and other industry professionals while content and the agenda will be determined by the AGCSA and Jacobsen.

All travel, accommodation and transfers will be organised for the successful applicants with meals and any extra travel also provided over the two days.

Applications for the 2019 AGCSA Future Turf Managers Initiative will open in November 2018.
