The R & A and ASTMA Scholarship

As part of our continued focus on education, the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association is pleased to announce it has partnered with the R&A to launch The R&A Greenkeeping Scholarship to Sports Turf Management students in Australia in 2020.

The Australian Sports Turf Managers Association and The R&A have partnered with Melbourne Polytechnic to pilot a Scholarship program in 2020, an initiative promoting pathways for students to continue studies for either the Diploma or Degree in Sports Turf Management.

A range of individual scholarships will be offered to Sportsfields & Grounds and Golf Course Management students studying at Melbourne Polytechnic in 2020, with an initial 1-year trial of the Scholarship used to refine and develop the application and selection processes, evaluate support requirements and plan for a National launch across all education institutions in Australia for 2021.

The 2020 Scholarship Programme

The Scholarship not only provides a financial contribution towards the costs of higher level education, the program also provide students with some unique Turf Management opportunities including assisting the course team during The Open Championship, join the stadium grounds operations at events throughout Australia, be part of the preparations for various domestic and European Tour events, and access networking opportunities with current and past R&A Greenkeeping scholars around the globe.

The decision to award a scholarship to Sports Turf Management students is based on a number of criteria including academic performance, career aspirations, extra-curricular activities and industry engagement along with individual circumstances

“We believe that education is a critical requirement to continue working through the most challenging problems facing our industry currently, and more importantly in the coming years.  We are very pleased to partner with The R&A who share our enthusiasm  for education and developing capabilities of Sports Turf Managers, and who continue to invest into training, development and sustainability” said Australian Sports Turf Managers Association Chief Executive Officer, Mark Unwin
