GCSAQ honours top achievers at awards night

The GCSAQ has handed out four awards as part of the 2010 Queensland Golf Industry Awards dinner held in Brisbane in early March. The AGCSA congratulates the following GCSAQ members on their awards:

Superintendents Achievement Award
Brett Thomson (Carbrook Golf Club)

Brett has been the course superintendent at Carbrook Golf Club since 2005 and in that time has significantly improved the turf surfaces and has created a quality golf course, which is now being well recognised, despite having limited labour and financial resources.  Brett continues to improve the course surfaces with a mixture of old and new machinery and his maintenance programs are both pro-active and preventative, ensuring that the club has not had a major turf issue during his tenure.

Superintendents Industry Recognition Award
Rob Green (Nuturf)

Rob has been a loyal employee to Nuturf and serviced the turf industry with outstanding success for the past 28 years.  Over the years he has met hundreds of people throughout the industry and many of that number are great friends of Rob today, rather than just customers.  Rob’s assistance, advice and guidance have certainly aided his customers, many of whom are from Queensland’s smaller, less financial clubs and Nuturf is especially proud of this achievement for one of its longest serving employees.

Superintendents Apprentice of the Year
Dane Robertson (Indooroopilly Golf Club)

Dane has acquitted himself admirably throughout his apprenticeship at Indooroopilly and shows a real shine for the work. He is always attentive and keen to pick up useful hints and techniques that might further advance his cause to become a golf course superintendent in his own right. This award will be a big step in the right direction in achieving that elusive goal.
**Dane will now go on to represent the GCSAQ in the AGCSA Graduate of the Yera, presented in partnership with Toro, which will he announced at the 27th Australian Turfgrass Conference and Trade Exhibition in Adelaide.**

Superintendents Environment Award
Troy MacLaren (Kabi Organic Golf Course)
Troy has been the course superintendent at Kabi Golf Club since 2001 just prior to the course opening.  Kabi is a purpose-built organic golf course which means that no chemicals or synthetic fertilisers are used on the golf course, with staff hand-weeding and spraying only things that are made naturally.  The organic approach to course management used at Kabi sets it apart from almost every other golf course anywhere in the world.
