Peter Frewin honoured at 2009 AGCSA Awards
An emotional former AGCSA president Peter Frewin was bestowed the AGCSA’s highest honour during the 25th Australian Turfgrass Conference in Hobart. Frewin, who recently stepped down as superintendent at Barwon Heads Golf Club after more than 20 years, received the 2009 AGCSA Distinguished Service Award and joins an elite list that has left an indelible mark on the Australian turf management profession.
The Distinguished Service Award, presented in partnership with Scotts Australia, is bestowed by the AGCSA Board and recognises an individual who has dedicated their time furthering a profession they are passionate about and to whom the industry owes a great deal of gratitude. In collecting the 2009 award Frewin becomes the fourth Victorian to receive the award since it was inaugurated in 1997.Frewin’s turf management career began in February 1981 when he took on an apprenticeship at Cheltenham Golf Club in Melbourne. After short stints at Maryborough Golf Club (Maryborough, VIC) and Rich River Golf Club (Moama, NSW), Frewin was appointed assistant superintendent at The Lakes Golf Club in Sydney. After two years at The Lakes, Frewin headed back to Victoria in June 1988 where he took over as superintendent at Barwon Heads Golf Club, which would become his second home for the next 21 years. Originally course superintendent Frewin’s role expanded to course and golf operations manager, a position which he held from 2002 until he stepped down in June this year.
Three other awards were also handed out in Hobart with Mona Vale Golf Club superintendent Andy Hugill collecting the prized Excellence in Golf Course Management Award, sponsored by John Deere. Hugill became the third NSW recipient in the past six years and beat home Western Australian-based finalist Craig New from Lakelands Country Club. Andrew Smith kept the NSW flag flying when he was named winner of the Syngenta-sponsored 2009 AGCSA Claude Crockford Environmental Award for his efforts at Yamba Golf Club, while Wade Williams from Federal Golf Club collected the 2009 AGCSA Graduate of the Year Award. Williams became the third winner of the Toro-sponsored award to hail from Federal and will now head to the Winter School for Turf Managers at the University of Massachusetts early next year. Full profiles on all 2009 AGCSA Award winners will be included in the next edition of Australian Turfgrass Management.
