The Australian turf industry continues to be challenged by the effects of climate change (including water shortages and unpredictable weather), client demands for the best playing surfaces, shortages of qualified and experienced staff, reducing budgets and the responsibilities of being good environmental stewards. The turf manager continues to be the person responsible for initiating and implementing change at a time where turf as we have known it is becoming more difficult to provide. Turf managers are always adapting to change whether it is introducing new turf species, employing new methods or searching for the edge that will provide the sportsperson with the best and safest possible playing surfaces.

Further education and training is critical in adapting to the demands of change. The 24th Australian Turfgrass Conference provides turf mangers and their staff with a broad range of speakers and topics that will challenge the mind, promote discussion and debate and more than the occasional laugh. This year's conference is about 'Our New Tomorrow' and will look at the issues, challenges and the solutions of the next decade.

While there will be a group of well-qualified speakers presenting at the conference, there will also be a major trade exhibition where all manner of products and machinery will be on show. The trade does a lot for our industry and is often the leader in innovation and a few hours spent at the trade show will undoubtedly provide you with new ideas for tackling that tricky problem.

As well as the conference and trade exhibition, don't forget there is also the opportunity to mix with your peers and those from other sectors of the turfgrass industry. The exchange of experiences with your fellow superintendents, turf managers and greenkeepers is invaluable. The post conference turf tour, as always, offers attendees the opportunity to visit, inspect and gain insight into the preparation methods of various sportsturf surfaces.

Look for that edge, new idea or motivation by attending the 24th Australian Turfgrass Conference and Trade Exhibition. We look forward to seeing you in Melbourne.
