AGCSA Excellence in Golf Course Management Award

John Deere logoIf the number of golf course projects in progress around Australia is anything to go by, the AGCSA Excellence in Golf Course Management award is always hotly contested. Launched in 2001, this award has taken over the proud tradition of the previous AGCSA Fellowship Award. The name has been refined and selection criteria adjusted to make it more suited to the modern golf course management industry. This in no way diminishes the achievements of past winners, but recognises the ever changing parameters that superintendents work within.

As the name suggests, this award aims to recognise a superintendent for achieving excellence in golf course management within the past two years, whether it be in the presentation of the course or reconstruction. Previous winners of the award include a who's who of the Australian golf course maintenance industry, including current and former AGCSA board members. In a change from recent years, nominations received for AGCSA Excellence in Golf Course Management Award will now remain active for the following two years.

Selection Criteria
Nominees for the AGCSA Excellence in Golf Course Management Award must be current AGCSA superintendent members. Nominations will be accepted from AGCSA members, club representatives, industry consultants and allied industry bodies.  All valid nominations will be judged individually by members of the AGCSA award subcommittee, consisting of independent industry experts. The subcommittee will then convene to bestow the award.

Requirements
In no less than 1000 words please detail and send a dossier or portfolio demonstrating how the nominee has displayed excellence in golf course management. Please make sure the following key judging points are covered:
  • Description of objectives prior to implementing changes.
  • Description of the golf course prior to implementing changes.
  • Description of the changed maintenance techniques, new innovations or construction.
  • Description of outcomes for the course upon completion of works.
  • Extent of knowledge of turfgrass management techniques.
  • Commitment to excellence.

2011 AGCSA Excellence in Golf Course Management

Winner: Colin Morrison (Flinders Golf Club, VIC)
Flinders Golf Club course superintendent Colin Morrison joined the likes of fellow Victorian colleagues Mark Jennings, Gary Bass, Mark Gahan and John Geary after he was named winner of the 2011 winner of the AGCSA’s Excellence in Golf Course Management Award at the Adelaide conference. Residing on the cliffs overlooking Bass Strait and Westernport Bay on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Flinders Golf Club is the sort of place which keeps you on your toes from a turf management perspective and while not having the resources of some of the other bigger players on peninsula, it is hard to fault the conditioning and presentation of the course which Morrison manages with precision.
